of defense and the national security council. prior to becoming chairman, he served briefly as the army's 37th chief of staff. general dempsey is a bit of an unexpected appointment. he had just been sworn in as the army chief of staff a couple of months prior, but when the nomination process for another candidate stalled, general dempsey was called to serve a grateful nation, and he has done so with distinction. since taking the chairman's job a year ago, the 37-year army veteran has made headlines by dealing with the infamous quran-burning pastor by calling him up and asking him to withdraw his support for the anti-muslim video that sparked protests across the middle east. he expressed disappointment over the navy seal who published an unauthorized account of the killing of osama bin laden. he said an israeli attack on iran would clearly delay but probably not destroy iran's nuclear program. he has stressed the need to retool the military for a postwar world with smaller pentagon budgets, and most recently he has spoken about the need to turn up the volume on ways to help war veterans reint

, a total sham. and moreover, governor romney also proposes a $2 trillion defense increase. now, if you want to do that, you think there's a case for it, and some of the military people are wrong. they need it. then you at least ought to say how you're going to pay for it. >> howard? >> hey, joe? >> the fascinating thing about all this is the positioning. now, i actually disagree with joe on raising the entitlement age. i don't have a problem with raising the age on social security because i agree with you actuarily. raising the age on medicare is really a bad idea. it's the one thing that would make me not support simpson-bowles if i were in the congress because medicare is a health insurance program. it isn't about an entitlement. it's about figuring out how to get everybody health insurance. the one program we have that covers everybody that's universal is medicare. why would you want to raise the age on medicare? but i agree with you on social security and the other entitlements. we cannot continue to have this kind of level of entitlement spending if we're going to balance the budget. b

a weak case. >> he does. he is on the defensive, unlike 2008. but he knows that. he has gone in there, he has to have an answer when governor romney gives us the figures that he has givenu us before. but to come back strong. he didn't do it. he seemed unprepared. in people say he seemed like he's bored. he's weary with the job. he's tired. he was sullen. he didn't feel like he wanted to be there. he doesn't like the debate. all of these thing, i think, played into it. but i think the president has to realize that this is the worst debate performance, just about i have ever seen. >> greta: he's very fortunate in that today, sort of change the narrative, to the jobs numbers. that in fact twent down to 7.8%. people are talking about that. that has moved the discussion a little off his debate performance and more on the discussion of the jobs. >> things do move o. but 7.8% is exact rate barack obama inherited. right? he says, i inherited the worst situation since the great depression. every month since he has been in office, unemployment has been higher than the worst situation since the grea

and these guys cannot be serious. >> it also -- they can't use the altitude defense that al gore was offering the president, the air was too thin up there, and he wasn't used to it. anyway, after the break, the national rifle association dips its toe into the attack ad waters taking on president obama, but while groups like the nra and their endorsements and dollars to the presidential campaign are donating their dollars to the presidential campaign, the more influential cash may be flowing down ballot. we will look at the big spenders next on "now." gecko (clearing throat) thank you, mr. speaker, uh, members of congress. in celebration of over 75 years of our government employees insurance company, or geico...as most of you know it. ...i propose savings for everyone! i'm talking hundreds here... and furthermore.. newcaster: breaking news. the gecko is demanding free pudding. and political parties that are actual parties! with cake! and presents! ah, that was good. too bad nobody could hear me. geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance. i've got a nice lon
